The world's five largest shipping companies today announced the formation of the Green Shipping Alliance, jointly investing $12 billion in the research and development of zero-emission ship technology. The plan aims to reduce the alliance members' carbon emissions by 50% by 2030 and promote the application of alternative energy sources such as hydrogen fuel and ammonia fuel in the freight sector.
A spokesperson for the alliance stated: "The shipping industry accounts for 90% of global trade, but contributes 3% of global carbon emissions. We hope to accelerate the industry's decarbonization process through technology sharing and economies of scale." It is understood that the first 10 green cargo ships will be launched in 2026, covering major routes between Asia and Europe.
